Co-curricular Auditions

Co-Curricular Auditions

In addition to seven curricular choirs, the RHS Choral Arts program also has six co-curricular, auditioned ensembles that are open to all RHS students. These choirs rehearse outside of school hours throughout the academic year. The co-curricular choirs sing at home concerts and participate in our annual solo and ensemble contest in April.

There are four upper-level co-curricular choirs for sophomores, juniors and seniors:

  • Chamber Singers, an advanced mixed (SATB) ensemble of 24 singers in grades 11 and 12, rehearses Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

  • Da Capo, an intermediate mixed ensemble of approximately 40 singers in grade 10, rehearses Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

  • Luminos, an advanced choir of 16-20 tenor and bass singers in grades 10 through 12, rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

  • Aurora, an advanced choir of 16-20 treble singers in grades 10 through 12, rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Auditions for these upper-level co-curricular choirs usually take place over the first two weeks of the school year. Aurora and Luminos also have an additional round of callback auditions. Singers do not need to prepare a solo for the audition. They are evaluated based on their tone, intonation, ability to sing independently, sight-reading, and tonal memory skills.

Aurora, Chamber Singers, Da Capo and Luminos typically start rehearsals in late September.

The ninth-grade select choirs are advanced co-curricular ensembles of 30-40 singers each, one for treble singers and one for tenor/bass singers. They are drawn mostly from the ninth-grade curricular choirs, Cantabile and Cantemus, but are open to all ninth-grade students:

  • Cantemus (tenor-bass) Chamber Ensemble rehearses Tuesday mornings, 6:50-7:25 a.m.

  • Cantabile (treble) Chamber Ensemble rehearses Wednesday mornings, 6:50-7:25 a.m.

These select choirs are chosen in the fall through a slightly different audition process than the upper-level choirs. Ninth-grade students not enrolled in Cantabile or Cantemus should stop by the choir office or contact Mr. Albaugh or Mrs. Toso for more information.
